2023-02-17-KCAD-Skiplane-Weekend: Skiplane Weekend at Cadillac, Michigan (KCAD) is wonderful time to visit with aviation friends and fly Yellow Piper Cubs and Blue BushCats, on skis, on the snow covered runways and lakes at and near Cadillac. We stayed at the Evergreen Resort and enjoyed their restaurant(s) and pool. There is a golf course, but it is covered with snow in the winter. Many winter people base their snowmobile and snow recreation vacations here. This aviation oriented adventure occurs annually on or about Valentines day, by invitation only. This year I flew the airlines DEN->Grand Rapids(KGRR)->DEN. EAA had scheduled their annual Skiplane flyin to Oshkosh (KOSH) Pioneer Field the previous weekend, but it was cancelled to lack of snow. We BARELY had enough snow to operate at KCAD because it had been raining for a few days before. Fortunately, on Thursday, 02/16/23, it snowed heavily, about 8". It turned out to be a great weekend for our Skiplane Weekend, but during the drive from KGRR to KCAD it was snowing heavily and travel was 30-45MPH for most of the 106 miles, with the interstate poorly/sparsely plowed, and the drivers were mostly unprepared to be out in those conditions. I had a GREAT time driving, flying and the pilot camaraderie was very enjoyable. Some of the wives and girlfriends came and went shopping instead of watching us fly.
