2011-08-13-Sandpoint-ID-Bird-Museum: 6th Annual Wings Over Sandpoint Fly-in/Splash-in, 08/13/2011. Dr. George Adams (pilot from Purdue, Indiana) and Jer/ Eberhard flew the Cessna-206 from Fort Collins - Loveland Airport (FNL) via Bozeman, MT (BZN) to Sandpoint, ID (SZT) for the fly-in and specifically to visit the Bird Aviation Museum and Invention Center: http://www.birdaviationmuseum.com/ and see the pristine (restored and flyable!!!) airplanes and Dr. Forrest M. Bird's medical inventions. The museum, airplanes and invention displays were outstanding! On Saturday morning, when in line for pancakes, the lady cooking the pancakes was inviting the pilot in front of me to visit the "Bird Museum". When it was time for me to get my pancakes, I asked her how to get there, as we had flown in and the museum was 17 miles away via road. We discussed my backcountry and short field experience and she said, "Just fly in. If any asks you, tell them Pam said it was OK". Little did I know that this was Dr. Bird's wife, Dr. Pamela Riddle Bird, an inventor in her own right! Here she was, cooking pancakes for the EAA fly-in! Wow! On the way back from Sandpoint, we flew into Moose Creek Airport (1U1), ID. This is one of the premier backcountry airstrips in Idaho. We also did a fly-by of many other backcountry airstrips, including Fish Lake (S92) and the "Flying B Ranch" (12ID) on the Middle Fork of the Salmon River. We were late in the morning, and the wind had come up, so as we teach in Idaho, "you want to be out of the backcountry by noon", so we continued our flight out to Afton Airport (AFO), WY, where we got fuel and took the courtesy car into town. We found the great BBQ place was closed on Sunday, and the locals recommended Pizza Hut over the Burger King. Hum-mm. From AFO we flew to Saratoga Airport (SAA), WY to visit "Hobo Hot Springs", which is being rebuilt, so we sat in the natural area with the stones mixing the hot springs water with the cold river water. :-) By 7PM, the rain and hail storm had moved east from the front range and we were able to fly back to FNL.
